Many well-informed and active members of the community are unaware of the role that United States Magistrate Judges play in supporting the Federal judiciary in civil and criminal matters and the importance of courts in general in upholding the rule of law. Judge Frankel will describe his background and his responsibilities as a United States Magistrate Judge and answer your questions concerning the role of courts in the Federal system of government.
Speaker’s Bio: United States Magistrate Judge Scott J. Frankel was sworn into office on August 13, 2024. He graduated from The Ohio State University College of Law with Honors in 1985 where he served as Editor-in Chief of The Ohio State Law Journal. After law school, Judge Frankel clerked for United States District Judge David S. Porter in the Southern District of Ohio.
Judge Frankel began his legal career as an associate at Mayer Brown, a prominent international law firm based in Chicago. He later transitioned to public service, joining the Cook County Public Defender’s Office, where he gained extensive courtroom experience handling both misdemeanors and felonies.
After his tenure as a public defender, he co-founded the law firm Frankel and Cohen. The firm focused on both civil and criminal litigation, including civil rights cases and serious felony matters, in both federal and state courts at the trial and appellate levels.
In 2018, Judge Frankel joined the South Bend Office of the Federal Community Defender, continuing his commitment to public defense until his appointment to the bench.
